Instead of Resolutions…Pray!

Posted By on Dec 30, 2015 | 2 comments

I have found that there is little power behind the good intentions of New Year’s resolutions. But I know that there is power in prayer. I’ve often said that had it not been people praying for me, I wouldn’t have survived being a pastor for nearly 40 years. Prayer matters, even if we do not see the results. God honors the faith behind our prayers. I believe there is nothing more important in 2016 than to pray.

Pastor John Merritt, This day: Instead of Resolutions...Pray

And yet, if you’re like me, we often struggle with knowing what to pray or how to pray. So I’ve often used written prayers of the saints to guide my daily prayers, and thought you may benefit from these meaningful prayers as well. I encourage you to begin praying these prayers daily at least through the month of January—or praying one prayer each day for a month (or even the year) and meditating on the words and phrases as you commit them to God. You may even commit these prayers to memory so that you can pray them any time of the day.

May the Lord bless you and keep you in 2016, and fill your hearts with prayer!

Today, Oh Lord, I yield myself to you.
May your will be my delight today.
May your way have perfect sway in me.
May your love be the pattern of my living.
I surrender to you my hopes, my dreams, my ambitions.
Do with them what you will, when you will, as you will.
I place into your loving care my family, my friends, my future.
Care for them with a care that I can never give.
I release into your hands my need to control,
My craving for status, my fear of obscurity.
Eradicate the evil,
Purify the good,
And establish your kingdom on earth.
For Jesus’ sake, Amen.

Christ as a light, illuminate and guide me.
Christ as a shield, overshadow me.
Christ under me,
Christ over me,
Christ beside me,
On my left and on my right.
This day be within and without me,
Lowly and meek, yet all powerful!
Be in my heart of each to whom I speak,
And in the mouth of each who speaks to me.
This day be within and without me,
Lowly and meek, yet all powerful!
Christ as a light,
Christ as a shield,
Christ beside me,
On my left and on my right.
In the strong name of Jesus, Amen.

Oh Lord, who encompasses the whole earth,
with your most merciful favor,
And not willing that any of your children should perish—
I would call down your blessing today,
on all who are striving toward the making of a better world.
I would pray especially:
For all who are valiant for truth,
For all who are working for more pure and just laws,
For all who are working for peace between nations,
For all who are engaged in healing diseases,
For all who are engaged in the relief of poverty,
For all who are engaged in the rescue of the oppressed,
For all who are working toward restoring the broken unity of your Church,
For all who preach the Gospel,
For all who bear witness to Christ throughout the world,
For all who suffer for upholding righteousness.
Cast down, oh Lord, all the forces of cruelty and wrong,
Defeat all selfish and worldly-minded schemes.
Prosper all that is motivated by the Spirit of Christ,
And serves to advance the Kingdom of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

  1. Thank you for the wonderful gift of these prayers.
